Living
.
.
in case
you missed
what happened next
the moral
of the story
take a breath
no, really
take that breath
pausing
just one moment
to catch yourself
living
your adventure
yeah, no lie
it helps to laugh
right through the tears
hanging your hat on
what grinds your gears
look back a bit
at some past lesson
from time gone by
when ships came in
or the other time
you missed that boat
and ask yourself
is there a question
you could ask
that would tell yourself
you already know

Sinking
.
.
sinking
and swimming
are the same
when inevitability sails by
to prove
for better and worse
happen at the same time
framed
in the every day
breathing
without thought
chasing imagined realities
that glow invisibly
at no extra cost
begging every question
no one can ask
when desperation demands
an answer
for something
that doesn’t exist

Look
.
.
is it true
or do we assume
truth happens
only when
we need to hear it
the rest
is illusory
allegory
a vague story
told as a tale
. tall
beneath urges
longings
daylight dreams
happening in real time
filled with love
laughter
and a feeling
that lingers just out of frame
begging to be viewed
but invisible
if you look
directly
into its eyes

Dust
.
.
as if the sun
has to decide to rise
as if the earth
chooses to spin
dust accumulates
marking the passing of time
in ways that lightness and darkness
cannot
so the simple stroke
of a cleaning cloth
becomes an act
of resetting
the immeasurable perpetual advance
of some bombastic
cosmic clock

Boom
.
.
years ago
when it was
another time
when we didn’t know
how things would go
how they’d turn out
in the end
our innocence
mixed with happenstance
as we danced
toward a final hour
our hearts went boom
as we crossed those rooms
and held their hands
in ours
