Dangblasted Updates!

with 11 comments

Curses! Progress has foiled me once again. While trying to compose today’s post, I discovered I could no longer format the images I upload in the “advanced” way I have previously.

This is a view of the old editing tab that has been eliminated in the latest update.

I was very fond of the previous version and the control it provided me to make things look the way I wished them to look.

Thank you for “improving” your software, WordPress, by removing features I used. You have completely taken the wind out of my creative sail.

Dear Relative Something audience, please forgive me for my loss of interest in posting what I had in mind for today. I will be whimpering in the corner until I can compose myself enough to return and investigate my options. With luck, it will just require a short learning curve to master a different way of doing things to get the results I seek. If not that, I may need to pony up some funds to purchase the control I hope to gain, if that is possible.

Time to consult with my much more tech-savy son… Stay tuned, I hope to be back to regular programming as soon as possible.

  1. So how’s that HTML thing workin’ out for ya? Can you pull all those codes off the top of your head like all those WP developers do? Or do you have to go look up every frickin’ one of them like I do, use trial and error until you get every element working just right for your particular need, and then finally get your post published in a form vaguely resembling what you intended? Yes, I used to do my own HTML web pages years ago too. 20-30 years ago. I’m 70 years old now. How much of that stuff am I supposed to remember!? I’m so mad right now I could spit nails!

    • I feel your pain. It has taken a lot of discipline to keep my calm.
My secret for using the code is that I just reverse engineer what worked before. I’m not trying to do anything new, luckily, so I just want my images to look the same as the previous thousand posts. I copy the formatting info from an old post and past into the new one, tweak the numbers, say a curse to whoever thought this change was a brilliant idea, and move on.
      It’s an exercise.

  2. There is the option to put a border around your image in post processing software of course, but I don’t know how to change the spacing apart from going in and editing the code. I’m getting pretty fed up with all this dumbing down to suit the needs of mobile and tablet users. Just look at the mess Windows 8 is! For PC users that is. Maybe I just need to go out and buy a tablet 😦

    • I’ve resigned myself to moving out of the “visual” into the “text” editing mode to format my images with html style codes. Whoopee!

      • I find it very odd that there was no warning of these changes, and that the help files weren’t changed beforehand, that’s very poor practice. I’m OK with the html as I started creating web pages that way, but there are an awful lot of people who can’t! Good luck John!

  3. They don’t consult, they don’t inform and they don’t test!

    • And they apparently don’t respond very quickly to the (understandable, and easily anticipated) outcries from their users!

      • Well done on your comments on the forum topic. They just make me angry with their unhelpful and sarcastic replies.

  4. If your son finds a solution (before WordPress decide they messed up, which they certainly did) do let everyone know…

    • His initial response is that it might be time for my blog to become self-hosted… Funny, this is just the thing WordPress says they can do for me, so I can focus all my creative energy on telling my story.
This seems like quite a fail on their part.
I still can’t shake my emotional reaction to the loss of this feature. Guess there is a lesson in it for me somewhere. That, and a lesson about becoming my own blog host…
