Three Views

leave a comment »

Sunday morning rounds walking Delilah and tending to the chickens in the fabulous early sunlight led to these three views…

I took off my gloves to use the camera and they became the subject in this frame.

The fence shadow making a statement is what initially caught my eye.

I think it’s interesting that from where I was standing, it looks like the barn’s not level. There is pretty much no flat ground anywhere on our property, but as far as I know, the buildings are actually level.

Waves of grain. Well, grass seed, anyway.

The paddocks have received little in the way of attention since the horses departed in April.

To Home

All too soon the trip is over, the time just comes, the dancing’s done

Bittersweet to reach the start again, don’t want to stop, can’t wait to get home

Imagine this: I didn’t take any pictures on our last day of riding from Hibbing back to our cars in Grand Rapids. However, I have scoured my files for some of my favorites from the week, several of which I am unable to credit because I can’t recall who the photographer was. In no particular order…

To Gilbert

with 2 comments

The day dawned foggy in Ely, but not nearly as cold as the first few days. We stayed dry all day, which was nice because it was a day of the farthest distance. I clocked in at 68 miles by the time we reached Gilbert.

With dry weather, it was easier for me to get the camera out while rolling down the road.

I had a goal of capturing a shot of Gary at some point, and when the opportunity presented itself…

I happened to come across Angela and Cynthia mid-pause on the shoulder, so I took their picture, too.

I like the totally unposed aspect of that shot.

It was day flat tires for some unknown reason. I was riding beside Steve when he hit a piece of steel that he mistook for wood. It put a slice in the sidewall that required a custom insert to keep the tube from bulging out.

The riding has gone well for me and I feel like I’ve finally got my old skills and form back for long distance cycling.

It’s a lot like riding a bike.

Remembering song chords and lyrics has been more of a challenge than the cycling.

Too Tired

leave a comment »

My middle-of-June biking and camping week begins one week from today. I am looking forward to being able to ride first thing in the morning when I am fresh and surrounded by more than a hundred friends sharing the experience with me.

I resumed my forced preparation cycling yesterday after work, alone and exhausted before I even started. The good news is that my butt appears to be toughened up by last weekend’s riding. The bad news is that my 90-minute ride was far short in terms of preparation for the days and many hours I will be on the saddle in a week.

After the day of work and the drain of a long afternoon drive home, I was more interested in a nap than a ride, but I got out there anyway.

This morning, I am too tired to think and write. Here are a couple of images from my adventures up north last weekend to distract you…

I’m going back to bed to catch a few more winks of beauty sleep.

Talk amongst yourselves.

Minutes Revisited

I’ve really been enjoying my little forays into the archives of this blog lately. Picking a single day of the month, and then jumping through each of the ten years of posts on that day has been very revealing.

In 2013 on March 27th, I was writing about getting fence posts up to define the border of the paddock, excited about how things would change when we got horses.

It was later that year, September, when the herd arrived. Here is a picture of the moment the four horses had just walked out of the trailer:

Tomorrow, the process is reversed.

Our time together was too short, but we had a lot of great adventures over the years and they touched a lot of people’s lives here.

I’m not sure what’s in store for us next, but whatever it is, we hope to do those horses proud. They’ve taught us a lot during the time we’ve been together.

Launching Spring

leave a comment »

Continuing my celebration of reaching the milestone of Relative Something‘s tenth year, I found two previously posted Words on Images creations in the “Previous Somethings” which correlate nicely with this first full day of spring.

Happy Vernal Equinox (which happened yesterday afternoon at 4:58 p.m. CDT)!

After the weather abuses we suffered throughout the second half of this winter, reaching spring seems particularly worthy of special recognition.

Out Late

with 2 comments

Cyndie and I had a night out on the town with her brother, Ben, last night.

Guess what city we were in?

We met for dinner in a historic diner.

Guess who we saw in concert at the Palace Theatre?

Guess who didn’t get enough sleep last night?

Yeah, that’d be me…
