They Won!

The CrossCribb rematch became a best-of-three after Cyndie and Anneliese defeated George and me in our second game in the fading sunshine out on the deck.

I trust Cyndie’s score-keeping despite how that photo makes it look like she needed to defend their point total. Game three got underway after dinner, and it didn’t take long for the dominance of their victory to unfold.

Luckily, the post-game celebration included ice cream for all, so that softened the blow of losing a little for me.

Earlier in the day, we lunched at Tattersall Distillery in River Falls. That location used to be a Shopko before George and Anneliese moved to Princeton, MN, so it was fun to show them what it has become since then.

In the afternoon, I was able to check off mowing the labyrinth from my list. It is now freshly trimmed.

For those of you who have known us for a long time, you may notice that we didn’t go to the lake for Memorial Day weekend. This is traditionally the big work weekend to clean up from winter’s wear and tear and prepare the community property for the summer. Cyndie can’t recall a Memorial weekend when she didn’t go up to the lake place.

This year, the “cabin” was reserved for a special event for her nephew, so that meant we were available to be home to host the visit with George and Anneliese.

It’s been a pretty special way to take a break from tradition, regardless of a win or a loss in our CrossCribb competitions.

Community Dinner

It’s Memorial Day holiday in the U.S. today, honoring our nation’s war dead. I have not directly experienced this kind of loss so my observance is generalized to the memories of all those who never returned home.

Our holiday weekend at the lake shifted from working together to socializing outside the lodge. Despite having ridden my bike past the sign announcing our high fire danger earlier in the afternoon…

at dinner, we lit the wood in the fire pit in the hope some smoke would keep the mosquitos at bay. Those pesky blood chasers are more troublesome this year than I remember them ever being before.

The gentle breeze off the lake was supposed to help reduce pressure from the flying bloodsuckers, too but it died down shortly after we gathered. It didn’t take long for the skeeters to get the upper hand. The lack of breeze made for less smoke from our fire, too.

At least that meant less fear of losing control of the flames in our fire pit.

The evening socializing was cut short as we all were chased indoors. At our place, a few more card games broke out on the porch.

It is feeling an awful lot like this is a holiday weekend.

Started Wet

The big workday of the weekend appeared to be a washout when we woke up yesterday but the winter’s accumulation of leaves on the beach was surprisingly manageable soon after the precipitation stopped. I spent the morning trying to reclaim our mini-labyrinth in the woods from the thick growth of ground covering wild plants.

That work actually started with a need to cut up a big limb that had fallen across several lanes of the pathway. Then my focus shifted to the ferns, trillium, ramps (a wild leek), and tree sprouts that needed to be removed. I made it about halfway before I needed to join the worker bees who showed up to tend to the beach.

By this morning, all that was left to do down at the lake was a little prescribed burn between the beach and boat docks. Having waited to start yesterday’s work until the rain was done, it was almost time for dinner when we finished raking out the sand.

Today is just the opposite in terms of weather as the morning has been dry thus far but there is a mass of precipitation heading our way. I keep getting warnings on my phone about lightning in the vicinity of Wintervale. That weather will reach Hayward a couple hours later.

We are going to wait for the rain to pass before heading out to finish pulling wild growth from the path of our forest labyrinth. The moisture will make the job easier in terms of the pulling plants but decidedly messier in terms of the footing.

There might be a card game with family relations materializing to fill the indoor portion of our day.

It feels a lot like a holiday weekend at the lake. Oh, did I forget to mention the fabulous meals we have been indulging in, both breakfasts and dinners? Yeah, that kind of family time at the lake.

Experience dictates, wet starts don’t automatically spoil the rest of a day’s activities..
