It deserves to be pointed out that 3 (pi)es were presented for dessert.

Coop’s Up

with 2 comments

My carpentry lesson is coming to its conclusion. Yesterday we finished the corner trim and some inside details, bringing us very close to the end of construction. There are several final things on the punch list yet to install, including hardware to critter-proof all the doors and a ramp for the tenants, but we are just about out of excuses for actually getting some birds.

Maybe we’ll get around to taking this to it’s logical conclusion.

Built using substantially salvaged materials, all the way down to some reclaimed nails, it came from this:

Beneath Trees

leave a comment »

After a bit of a pause in construction, I was stepping out to work on the chicken coop again yesterday, now that Cyndie is home to lend a helping hand. We were taking advantage of the very summer-like weather gracing our region this first week of November.

Striding across the yard I was suddenly struck by how distinctly different the carpet of leaves was within just a few steps. Photo op!

Another example of the micro-environments that collectively make up the paradise where we live. We call it Wintervale Ranch.

Sun Basking

with 2 comments

This time of year around these parts, when there is warm sun painting the afternoon, you best soak it up to the fullest extent possible. After tending to the horses when I got home from work yesterday, Delilah and I were making our way back to the house and were overcome by an irresistible urge to pause and bask in the glorious warm autumn sunshine.

After I took a few portraits of her, Delilah said she wanted to take some pictures of me. I gave her the phone and struck a pose.

She said she needed to fix something. My nose was runny.

If I used Facebook, I’d have to update my profile picture with that one.

img_ip1760e.It was pretty funny watching her hold the phone in her teeth as she reached up with her paw to touch the button for the photos.

Four Years

leave a comment »

I was reviewing the “Previous Somethings” archive for some posts that I published four years ago and came upon a picture that means so much to me. During our very first visit in 2012 to see this property with our realtor, I was so overwhelmed by the experience that I hardly took any pictures.

This is one of the few I had for remembering what we had seen, to help me describe the place to family and friends. We had walked a short loop of the trails and I dropped behind Cyndie and Patti while dizzily trying to comprehend what I was experiencing. The place was beyond my wildest imaginings for us.

I came to my senses for a moment and remembered my camera. I captured Cyndie and Patti walking in the distance on a mowed path through one of the fields.

They are walking in a spot that today is about where the entrance to the labyrinth garden is, on their left. The tall weeds on the right are now what we call the Back Pasture, surrounded by a fence.

These are some recent shots of how that spot looks now.

I get a shiver thinking about that first impression and our visions of the possibilities, combined with the realization of all that has come to be in the four years since.
