Brooke Writes

Today’s post is a contribution from my niece’s daughter, Brooke Friese, age 11. Brooke and her brother, Drew came with their mother for a visit last Friday. I was thrilled when she accepted my invitation to write a guest post about their day.

IMG_iP0762eI went to my great aunt Cindy and uncle John Hays’ Wintervale Ranch. It was one of the best days of the week!

They have a beautiful (and furry dog) named Delilah that loves to slobber all over frisbees when you throw it :). They also have an adorable cat named Pequenita; we also have two cats which are twins. Pequenita and my two cute cats are very alike. They are both small and they both are tortoiseshell cats, the only difference between them is my cats have more black and Pequenita has more brown.

Anyway back to Delilah and Pequenita (‘Nita for short), Delilah, being a dog, obviously wants to play, chase, sniff, and lick ‘Nita until she runs and hides meowing at Delilah all the way.

DSCN2963eWe also went on a walk through the beautiful (but very muddy) woods; we passed a fallen tree that Uncle John has nicknamed “The Brooke tree,” we walked down to the labyrinth, it was super cool!

I can’t wait to see it in the summer! My brother and I followed the winding trails to the middle and then back out again.

Then uncle John led us to the barn where we said hello to the horses. Legacy, (a beautiful snow white horse) acts as the boss of all the other horses (Hunter, Cayenne, and Dezirea) he pulls back his ears and jerks slightly towards the horse(s) that is bugging him.

DSCN2965e Dezirea acts as the mother, making sure everyone is fed before she eats, and makes sure everyone is using manners at all times, but she will never scold Legacy, after all he is the boss!

Then we headed over to the hay barn, I wasn’t expecting much, I mean it’s called “The Hay Barn,” there’s bound to be a few stacks of hay . . . oh no, when I walked into the hay barn I was surprised.

I saw tons and tons, two huge piles of hay both stacked in the form of stairs. My brother and I had fun climbing and exploring on the huge mounds of hay (with Uncle John’s permission).

After my brother and I were exhausted from climbing on the two piles we walked over to Uncle John’s compost/molding horse manure piles, there were three piles of manure covered in thousands of flies. Along with the three piles was a still frozen compost pile that was now almost dirt, and wheel barrel full of more almost-dirt-compost, (My brother, Drew also pulled apart the poo with his bare hands so he could see what it looked like inside! Delilah also ate some manure! Ewwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!) Then Uncle John shifted the manure with a pitchfork, and the moldy compost started to steam! Uncle John measured the heat of the manure and it was around 130 degrees! Wow it was only around 50 degrees outside!

After that we headed inside, we played a hide and seek game with Delilah where we hide a ball and she had to go and sniff it out, it was awesome! My visit to Wintervale was super fun and exciting from Ellsworth’s cheese factory to Legacy’s bossiness. I can’t wait to come back! 🙂

(While we were at the lake, our daughter, Elysa, was home running the ranch. That was blessing enough, but she has gone beyond the call of duty and has also written a guest post for us, too! The photos are both taken by her, as well. Thanks a million, E!)

I was in charge of the ranch over the weekend, and I’m happy to report that it went well despite my parents’ absence!

20131228_082130eSaturday morning was as beautiful at Wintervale as it was reported up in Hayward with the long crystals of frost covering every surface. As I walked down the driveway toward the barn, the sunrise lit up over the snow and glistened on the frost. It was breathtaking! However, I tend to find myself lost in the moment without any camera most of the time. I went back to the house after feeding the horses to grab my phone for some quick photos while getting in a walk for Delilah. My dad posts wonderful scenes at Wintervale here on the blog, but they just cannot compare to the experience of viewing it all in person. Luckily, I had the opportunity to watch both sunrise and sunset when I went to feed the horses each day.

While the horses ate at dawn, the dog was up even earlier than that. Working on farm-time was a bit of an adjustment for me. I was getting up almost four hours earlier than usual. Delilah was a delightful challenge (most of the time). She got me up early, kept me busy all day, and gave me a whole set of reasons to be skeptical of her doggie kisses, seeing what she puts in her mouth. She also got caught chewing one of her toys to shreds on multiple occasions (covering herself and her surroundings with bits of batting and leftover squeakers) and trying to sneak small branches into the house. 20131230_104033eTo give her some credit, she did let me “sleep in” until 7am on Monday and later spent some time quietly cuddling her favorite toys. I definitely have a new respect for all the work my parents are doing each and every day!

I’d have to say caring for the rest of the animals was easier than the demands of the dog. The horses probably noticed that I wasn’t that good at putting out their hay without showering myself in it. I found myself picking out bits and pieces of hay from my hair and clothes for a while after each feeding. The cats were pleasant roommates. Mozyr snuggled up next to me through one of the cold nights. Pequenita was an instigator of over-excitement as she taunted the dog time and again. Though it was challenging at times, the farm life has been a welcome experience to balance my everyday life in the Twin Cities.

Many thanks to my parents for sharing it all with me as they build their Wintervale wonderland! I’m so glad they could take a break and enjoy their stay at the cabin. (So are we. Thanks, Elysa!)

Today, I am happy to present another “guest post” from Cyndie Hays. Knowing I was going to be pressed for time, she surprised me with this precious gem that she created for today’s Relative Something post:

When Cyndie asked if she could write a “guest post” today,  I was very happy to accommodate her. The Tour de France just keeps interrupting my train of thought this morning… JWH

I’m impressed. John has written this blog for 490 days in  a row. Quite an accomplishment… You try it! I can’t imagine the level of dedication, conviction, crazy devotion and brilliance it takes to write for ‘publication’ every day. It all started when he was a kid growing up in Eden Prairie  reading Jim Klobuchar’s column in the Star Tribune. Then John tried his hand at writing and publishing a rock and roll magazine. Add in the annual doses of riding his bike with his buddies on the ‘Jaunt with Jim’ (Klobuchar, that is) for 500 miles every summer that stirs his creativity and brings such joy he can’t contain without sharing with others. Add in a small dose of ‘Jim Klobuchar’s admiration‘ of the poem and song John has written in honor of the friends and fun he enjoys on the annual bike trips.  The ‘coup de gras’, however, was John’s Nepal trip, again led by Jim Klobuchar, that prompted his commitment to writing a daily blog. So there is an amazing bond and strange connection my husband has developed with Jim Klobuchar that has in essence transcended all reason and led to a continuing legacy of insightful writing. I hope the contagion factor continues as readers of Relative Something continue to pass along the blog address and encourage others to begin reading. It is an amazing gift John offers and I, for one, am grateful for his gift of words and amazing insights shared with those who visit Relative Something. As his wife and best friend, I asked to be a guest writer on his blog because I, too, aspire, to write everyday. He is my true inspiration!
