it glides
like an idea does
flowing through
effortlessly
the good ones do anyway
but you have to be able to hear it
the way dogs do
tilting your head
expectantly
listening
for the nugget
nested amidst the clutter
a dancing derelict downburst
gushing forth wisdom
in rapid staccato bursts
that laugh at the universe
effortlessly and endlessly
but quietly
with a slight hint of hesitation
as if it were important
which it probably is

Stuck

late at night
past the flickering city lights
the warmth of summer at the solstice
mixes gently
with the chill
that settles in the low spots
where crickets keep their beat
a time signature set by heat
or possibly the lack thereof
sleep swoops in slyly
crescent moon
hangs there dryly
where nothing ever happens
life is stuck in possibility
awaiting aimlessly
for the next wave coming
just in case
it eventually does

Sleepy

while unintentionally falling asleep
I tend to hear things in my head
voices speaking out
or a cat’s meow
which startles me awake again
and then I realize
the sound didn’t happen
didn’t come through my ears
did I make up that sound?
that voice?
why would I do that?
I was awake and thinking
when a blink failed to open
so the brain makes a switch
from thinking thoughts to making sounds
that ears cannot hear
but thoughts cannot recognize
as thoughts
just sounds
that I discover
after returning to awake
and I wonder
if I had stayed asleep
would that sound have become
a dream?
