Exaggerate
I don’t mean to exaggerate
but I just ate a million tons of chili
that tasted so good
I wanted six tons more
and the ice in my water glass
is partying on my tongue
soothing the burn
quenching my thirst
consolidating the fun
so I just forgot
about curfews
provocations
international aggressions
localized gun violence
climate disasters
and citizen oppression
by sitting in my food coma
and letting the singers sing
their battles
against one another
between commercials that mean
nothing to me
no longer hungering
for any single additional thing

Chilling
.
but you had beef jerky in your pocket
and I didn’t know that
six strange ways we wasted one chance
late that night
in the forested swamp
it wasn’t even cold
nothing like the bitter biting icy burn
we faced up north every January
where ice fractures when it freezes too hard
it was damp
creating a different chill
one that pulls out warmth
more than it pushes in cold
and ideas start to vanish
common sense vaporizes
as it certainly did
late that night
or we would have probably lived
to tell about it
and why this had anything to do
with the cupola on the roof of that barn

Brutal Honesty

good riddance
sociopathic megalomaniac
go away
leave today
end the grift
the whole charade
let my people go
make lying shameful again
bring back decorum
reclaim politeness
arise highest ideals
embrace empathy
authenticity
transparency
altruism
nobility
integrity
truth and honesty
justice
equality
responsibility
hope
healing
it’s all been gone for far too long
let us breathe deep
the dawn of this new day
unite
our greatest of expectations
and face
the challenges ahead
together

Bigger Picture

come from behind
to defeat odds stacked against us
in a game
or in life
or a philosophy of life
wear the colors
join the chorus
sing praises for victories
feel pain when we lose
except for one thing
life is not a game
between only two sides
to be won or lost
no holds barred
in matters of life and death
it doesn’t work like that
the recommended links
don’t tell us what we need to learn
about a picture
so much bigger than coaches and fans
strategies and plans
greater than statistical digits
hopes
dreams
ideals
love and happiness
we the people
are multitude
humankind will thrive
in extra time
when we open all eyes
to the greatest goodness
way outside the lines
of mere wins and losses
