Desired Result

with 2 comments

Got what I wanted! The quality of results for most of my picture-taking is a function of luck since I don’t spend any time on technical details, choosing instead to settle for whatever the “auto” setting conjures.

On Sunday, the combination of sun, snow, shadow, red paint, and reflection caught my eye. If you look close, I even got a selfie out of the deal.

I love how the snow looks so much like paper or felt. The roll of the lower left reflection that flows similar to the broken edge of the snow. The compliment of the contrasting black trim. How the shadow reveals the space between the snow and truck surface.

Most of all, I like that the camera actually captured what intrigued me enough to take this picture.

All too often, I don’t even bother pulling out the camera when scenes around here are too big for a photo to do proper justice. Nothing works as well at interpreting a complete landscape as a pair of eyes perceiving it in real-time.

For my vague impressionistic compositions, the little point-and-shoot I use has provided me with enough lucky outcomes to keep me giving it a go.

Every once in a while, I get a satisfying reward.

Drifting – Again

leave a comment »

Revisiting a “Words on Images” from 2013 that fits for me lately, as change around home has been not so apparent, day-to-day. That, and the fact I haven’t been taking many new pictures that inspire words.

Just drifting away on the light… and breathing; less verbal than my usual old self.

I was looking at this moss-covered rock in our woods and decided to take some pictures of it. I don’t recall noticing the leaves around it, but after transferring the images to my computer, it is the leaf pierced by the stem of another leaf that leaps out of the image for me.

I love it.

I zoomed in and cropped another angle to produce this result:

Sky Views

with 2 comments

The sky has been treating us to a nice variety of cloud edges recently. Here are three I was able to capture that represent the range of views we get to enjoy while toiling away on our chores.

According to the weather forecast, our blue skies are about to change to snow clouds. Cold and wet is a condition for which we move horses indoors to the shelter of the barn and their stalls. Thus begins the season of wood shavings added to the compost heaps, which significantly increases the volume of space occupied.

It’s also the season of plowing and shoveling snow, hauling firewood, and eventually, building igloos. Snakes disappear. Mosquitoes disappear. What’s not to love? In a couple of months, it will even be winter.

A very fitting season for Wintervale Ranch.
