Relative Something

Just in case you didn’t notice, it’s time to change your calendar. Happy August. The sweet corn is ready.

Hey, have you heard about the trick of cooking your un-shucked sweet corn in the microwave? You save all the work of trying to get all the silk off, and when it is done (about 4 minutes per ear), you can shake the corn free and it will be clean and ready to eat! May not make sense for cooking enough for a large group, but for someone living alone, it is pretty slick. In fact, I wouldn’t otherwise bother to clean an ear of corn, and boil water to cook it, for just myself. It’s been a great revelation for me.

Last night, as I shopped for groceries online, wondering if my lovely wife would surprise me and arrive home from Boston before it is time for me to make those shopping decisions alone one more time, I became aware of how I have adjusted myself to her departure from my home life. Part of my mental adjustments (like hardening myself to her absence) have been a form of self-defense, which I have since relaxed a bit after her announcement of returning, so I now find myself missing her increasingly more everyday.

I am unabashedly ready to have my wife home again. Isn’t that sweet?
